Thanks for pitching in on this too.
I'm not sure if it's a shared host or virtual - I can change the PHP version at will, so would that suggest a VPS? Let me know if there's an easy way to tell!

1) I will indeed have to ask the hosting co to do this - is this likely to actually *break* the site completely, or just cause problems with sessions?
2) I couldn't find a setting called "php" - do you mean?

3) We don't have any control over the MariaDb version (in fact, I'm wondering if this is what our host has changed under the hood!) I'm sure we used to be on MariaDb 5.something
